IMITATING THE DRAGON: THE HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF BRUCEPLOITATION CINEMA PART 1 OF 2--This two-part article series is an extensive look at the much-maligned Bruce Lee Clone phenomenon of the 1970s. Part 1 covers Bruce Lee's brief career and how he was exploited while he was still alive. The beginnings of the Imitations started with Taiwanese actor/martial artist Tong Lung and the many movies that imitated Lee with similar sounding titles. We also take a look at the wild marketing of these films in other countries. Coverage of the making of BRUCE LEE AND I (1976), and a lengthy discussion of the career of Ho Chung Tao, alias Bruce Li concludes this info-packed first part of Imitating the Dragon! Box office numbers are included where available.

IMITATING THE DRAGON: THE HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE OF BRUCEPLOITATION CINEMA PART 2 OF 2--This second chapter concludes our two-part series on Bruceploitation. Part 2 begins with the career of Huang Chien Lung, alias Bruce Le; his start at Shaw Brothers and then onto his shameless series of Bruce Lee clone productions and the bizarre marketing of his and others films around the world. Le's contributions to the second Kung Fu Boom in America on television and VHS, and discussion of how these films helped kill the theatrical exhibition of Kung Fu movies off. Then there's a catalog of 17 additional Clones and genre-related personnel follows. Part 2 concludes with an interview with producer/distributor Serafilm Karalexis who handled several of these films back in the wild and woolly 1970s! Box-office results are included where available.

INVINCIBLE ONE: THE EMPIRE OF SIR RUN RUN SHAW PART ONE--Part One of a two part article on the most influential producer of Hong Kong cinema, the late Sir Run Run Shaw. This first installment covers he and his brother Runme's early showbiz career, building the studio, the actors training academy, famous foreign stars visiting the studio, their theater chains and promotional events. Rare photos from old magazines fill out the piece!

INVINCIBLE ONE: THE EMPIRE OF SIR RUN RUN SHAW PART TWO--Part Two concludes the Shaw article. This even bigger piece contains even more rare photos and covers Shaw's kung fu movies, co-productions, his women, his battles with his stars, his alleged iron fisted methods, his charity work, his knighthood, the end of the Shaw Studio in the mid 80s, and Shaw's last few years!

He headlined a handful of cult horror favorites, but took supporting roles in many others. He's often overlooked in favor of the the more well known Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. This ode to the Gough is peppered with interview quotes and movie quips from the man himself!

MONSTER KID MOVIE MEMORIES PART 1--This three part series is a personal diary cataloging my personal monster memories growing up in the late 1970s through the 1980s. Part 1 covers creature features, cartoons and great TV shows back in the day!

NEGLECTED DIRECTORS OF SHAW BROTHERS STUDIO: MOU TUN FEI--This single, but lengthy chapter in the Shaw Neglected Directors Series is all about the controversial filmmaker, Mou Tun fei who will be best remembered for MEN BEHIND THE SUN (1988). THE WILD, WILD EAST: DUEL OF THE INDEPENDENT FILM COMPANIES PART 1--The Wild, Wild East: Duel of the Independent Film Companies Part 1 is a look at the entire decade of the 1970s and the HK independent movie industry, as well as both Shaw's and Golden Harvest. Part 1 takes an in-depth look at the life and tumultuous career of Jimmy Wang Yu, broke up into two chapters. In between are a lengthy look at Kao Pao Shu, a female action movie director, and an expansion of Chen Kuan Tai's troubles at Shaw Brothers detailed in a previous article. Opening the piece is an overview of the industry in the 70s and the obstacles those within it had to deal with throughout the decade. Jam-packed with images and box office figures to help add insight into an era that has had little exposure outside of Asia. This five-part series is, while edited down from a much larger piece, the most comprehensive on the Indy scene in English.

THE WILD, WILD EAST: DUEL OF THE INDEPENDENT FILM COMPANIES PART 2--The Wild, Wild East: Duel of the Independent Film Companies Part 2 takes an extensive look at the career of Polly Shang Kuan Ling Feng. Broke up into two chapters, covering many incidents during her time at Union Films and First Films; her rivalry with Hsu Feng; lawsuits for breaking contracts; working on a French comedy shot at Shaw Brothers co-starring Mickey Rooney; and more. From there we look at the careers of Chen Sing and Yasuaki Kurata. For the former, there's a 1973 interview with the man and his thoughts on the industry; for the latter, there's vintage anecdotes from Kurata about being a Japanese in the HK film industry. Finally, there's career overviews of three Triad actors--Charles Heung, Alan Tang, and Chen Hui Min. Additionally, there's discussion of Kam Kong, First Films, Joseph Kuo Nan Hung, and Josephine Siao Fong Fong; accompanied by lots of images, box office numbers and many crazy stories about making martial arts action movies in 1970s Hong Kong and Taiwan. 
 
THE WILD, WILD EAST: DUEL OF THE INDEPENDENT FILM COMPANIES PART 3--Part 3 of The Wild, Wild East: Duel of the Independent Film Companies looks at two indy establishments--Yang Tze Productions and Goldig Films--and the differences in both operations in how they were ran. Covered here are Jason Pai Piao's early days as a stuntman and eventual leading man status; Yang Tze's He-Man Contest that opened the door to a future big name; a member of a Chinese Rat Pack who later became the manager to a future superstar of the genre; Bruce Liang's first movies; Ng See Yuen in his own words on shooting guerilla style in Italy; a number of actors who signed up for Yang Tze and never made it; Bikini model Meg Lam on her lead role in BALD-HEADED BETTY; Chow Yun Fat and James Yi Lei at Goldig; Pai Piao and Tony Lu Chin Ku and their post-Yang Tze days in their own words; the killing of actor Thompson Kao Kang and more; box office numbers for many of the films discussed are included where applicable.
